NASC Agenda
November 19th, 2019
Welcome & Introductions
Charlie welcomed us today to Moose Lake.
Updates
Hermantown district has official removed themself from our NASC group. Dean Dahlvang (ARCC/Proctor) joined us today to learn more about our committee.
Help Chat
Charlie brought up the idea of formulating goals to help direct our committees and subcommittees.
There was discussion about the cultural competency training and how different schools are interpreting this mandate.
  • Cloquet is conducting this training for those that need it in January/February.
  • Esko is using one Wednesday a month to take care of this mandate for all staff this year. An example of one of their sessions is below:
    • 1) View the following video together.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZahtlxW2CIQ&feature=youtu.be
    • 2)  Discuss the following points; have each in the department share their experiences and thoughts.
    •       A). Think of a time that you observed or overheard someone commit a microaggression that you sensed was or could have been offensive or hurtful to others:
    •               -Describe the microaggression
    •               -In what way did you feel it was offensive?
    •               -Discuss a possible response strategy you could use in the future if you observed or overheard the same microaggression again.
    •        B). Think about a time that you made a comment that you realized was offensive or hurtful to others.
    •                -Describe the microaggression
    •                -In what way was it offensive to someone or others
    •                -How did you feel when you realized it may have been offensive
    •                -What's a strategy you can use in the future to take ownership if you committed the same microaggression again.
    •         C)  What are constructive ways we can try to create an environment that helps others avoid/deal with microaggressions?  What are the hardships we face in trying to create an environment that help others avoid/deal with microaggressions
Vice-Chair Nominations:
Jennifer Hoffmann
No other nominations were made.

Action Committees
Review where we are at (see October minutes below):
Action Committees work time

  • Collaboration:
    • Discussed the reaction from the Newsletter - Volume #1
    • Looking for more stories for the next volume
    • Discussed ways to connect individuals, including involving other consortiums (ARCC).
    • Added questions and Google form to SAGA sessions to gather data from people wanting to collaborate.
    • Next Newsletter could offer tips/suggestions for MLK day.
  • Innovation:
    • As a NASC group it would be nice as a whole to organize “SOS” situations (new standards, new curriculum purchases, implementing standardized grading, restorative practices, cultural competencies, etc)
      • Starting with new science standards...finding someone to present on this and bring people together for this from districts…
        • Contacted Regional Centers of Excellence (Bekki), John Olson (MDE) (Carrie), and need to maybe contact MNSTA
    • How can we give people what they need? Once we help and shows others what we can do as a group, we think we will be able to provide productive and meaningful experiences for our districts…
    • How do we make NASC more available to all? Are people talking about NASC at staff meetings or other times when big questions come up? So we can help more...
  • Staff Development:
    • Gathering of Great Minds
      • This year’s keynote is Dave Burgess
      • Gathering presenters
      • Information will be posted on the NASC website
      • All presenter presentations need to utilize Google Apps
      • January 20th in Moose Lake
      • Digital Sign In
      • Will include a SAGA session with guiding question(s) and a facilitator
        • Brainstorm ways in which your group would benefit from collaboration.
        • What topics would you like to collaborate on?
        • Who is interested in collaborating?
        • When/Where will this collaboration take place?
        • What support will you need in order to make this collaboration happen?
        • Add a link into the SAGA agenda so NASC can reference and support those interested in collaborating. (Link includes; Subject Areas, Teacher, Schools, Contact email, Support from NASC needed)
    • EDCAMP
      • Review ideas on how to add something new to EDCamp

Things to do:
  • Come to the next meeting with a NASC highlight that could be added to the promotional video.
Other
